THE REGION

Where we live and hunt

Romania Hunting is based in Oradea, and this is the country we know tree by tree. Crișana and the Banat run from the karst plateaus and beech forests of the Apuseni mountains down to the lowland oak woods and farmland along the western border — game-rich country that most foreign hunters fly straight over on their way to Transylvania.

The Apuseni hold red deer, boar, and roe; the Banat's mixed forests and gorges carry strong boar densities; and the managed reserves in the Banat foothills are where our mouflon programme runs. Being local means short drives: most of our western grounds are within two hours of the Oradea, Arad, or Timișoara airports.

HERITAGE

A short hunting history

The Banat was the Habsburg empire's model province, and its forests were managed with the same thoroughness as its farmland — organised game keeping, planted oak woods, and the hunting culture of the Austro-Hungarian court reached here early and stayed. Mouflon, introduced from Corsican and Sardinian stock in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, thrived in the Banat foothill reserves and remain one of the region's signature trophies.

Crișana's Apuseni mountains stayed wilder — a karst massif of caves, gorges, and high beech forest where red deer and boar were never fenced or farmed. The Bears' Cave at Chișcău, discovered in 1975 with its floor full of cave-bear skeletons, is a reminder of how long these mountains have held big game.

Hunting today runs under the national framework (Legea 407/2006), with seasons and quotas set annually.
