ABOUT THE HUNT

What to expect

Mouflon (Ovis musimon) is not a native Carpathian species — the Romanian populations descend from Sardinian and Corsican stock introduced in the 19th and 20th centuries for trophy hunting. The animals now thrive in two or three large managed reserves in Banat and the Hunedoara foothills: enclosures of several thousand hectares with mixed oak-and-rock habitat, where the herds breed naturally and the hunts are run on foot the same way they would be in fully wild conditions.

We are transparent about this. The mouflon programme is not part of our wild-game ethic the same way the boar, red deer, and chamois hunts are — it is a managed-population hunt on enclosed reserve land. We include it because the trophy itself is excellent (a full-curl Carpathian ram is one of the finest mouflon trophies in Europe), because the hunting style is genuine spot-and-stalk on rocky terrain, and because clients building a European trophy collection often want it. If you want a fully-wild hunt with no enclosure component, pick chamois or red deer instead.

How the hunt works. One-on-one with a senior guide. You glass the grass benches at first light, identify a ram worth taking, and stalk into shooting range — typically 150 to 280 metres across broken rock. The October rut is the prime window: heavy rams chase ewes, drop their guard, and stand long enough for the shot. Outside the rut they spend most of the day above the rock line and only the patient hunters get a clean opportunity.

Trophy fees are CIC-scored on horn length plus circumference and scale steeply with size — a silver-medal ram is several times the price of a cull animal. The table below indicates the brackets; the final figure is confirmed when the trophy is measured at the end of the hunt.
